San Antonio is home to many historic landmarks, each with its own unique story. One such place is the Lone Star Brewery complex, a site that has transformed through the decades while maintaining its historical significance.

What Makes Lone Star Brewery Historic?

Established in 1883 by John Henry Kampmann and Edward Hope, the Lone Star Brewery quickly became Texas's largest brewery by 1900. With the backing of Adolphus Busch, the founder of Anheuser-Busch, the brewery flourished. However, Prohibition forced a shift in production to non-alcoholic beverages like "Tango."

Over the years, the complex served various roles—from a warehouse to an arts hub. In the 1970s, the San Antonio Museum Association acquired the site, and in 1981, it opened as the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA). Today, it houses one of the most diverse art collections in Texas, preserving the city's rich cultural heritage.
