HemisFair Historic District: A Legacy of History and Progress
The HemisFair Historic District in San Antonio holds a special place in the city’s history. Bounded by E. Market St., S. Bowie St., Durango, and S. Alamo St., this area was the site of HemisFair '68, a pivotal event that marked San Antonio’s 250th anniversary. The fair, held from April 6 to October 6, 1968, celebrated the theme “Confluence of Civilizations in the Americas”, attracting over 6.3 million visitors from around the globe and featuring participation from over 30 nations.
But the history of the HemisFair District stretches back even further. Originally, Mission San Antonio de Valero used this land for farming.
By the late 19th century, it had evolved into a bustling residential neighborhood. To prepare for the international fair, a large portion of the area was redeveloped. While many buildings were demolished to make way for the 92.6-acre HemisFair grounds, 24 historic structures were preserved, adding to the neighborhood’s rich historical significance.
HemisFair’s Architectural Landmarks
Several iconic landmarks from HemisFair '68 continue to shape the landscape of this historic district today. The 622-foot Tower of the Americas, one of the tallest observation towers in the U.S., stands as a symbol of San Antonio’s forward-looking spirit. Other notable sites include the Institute of Texan Cultures, which showcases the state’s diverse heritage, and a portion of the beloved San Antonio Riverwalk, which winds its way through the district, offering picturesque views and easy access to the city’s vibrant downtown.
In addition to these public landmarks, the HemisFair Historic District is home to preserved buildings that reflect the architectural styles of a bygone era, blending seamlessly with the newer developments created for the fair. The result is a unique mix of historic structures and modern amenities, creating a neighborhood that balances its past and present.
